Blogs and Cactuses

The other day, I was browsing over at The Pioneer Woman and came across an amusing post entitled Ten Important Things I've Learned About Blogging.  It was No. 2 on the list that caught my attention:

2. Blog often.

Whether you write a sixteen-paragraph essay about the cosmic implications of a free market system, a one-paragraph description of what happens to your soul when you walk into your godforsaken laundry room, or a simple photo and caption, consider your blog a precious bloom that requires daily nurturing.

And watering.

If you water a plant once every two weeks, it will shrivel.

Unless that plant is a cactus, and then it would thrive.

And to tell you the truth, I really can’t figure out how a cactus fits into this analogy, so forget I brought it up.

I laughed.  A lot.  Because apparently, my blog is a cactus.  Once in a great while, I get a little crazy and post five times in one week--take the last week of September, for example.  But that's really an anomaly in my overall blogging history.  Most times I post once a week, and sometimes I go two weeks or longer between posts (gasp!).

It isn't that I don't want to blog more often.  I do.  Oh, I do.  In fact, I was thinking recently that if I were a bumper-sticker kind of girl, I'd need to get one that said, "I'd rather be blogging."  Because it's true.  I love to blog.  And there is so much I want to write about here.

So what's stopping me?  Sometimes it's a lack of time or strength.  Sometimes it's all the usual writer's block culprits.  And sometimes it's just plain fear.  Fear of facing the thoughts in my head.  Fear of failing to say what I most want to say.  Fear of letting everybody down.

What I learned during my late-September blogging spree is this:  When I blog more often, I enjoy it more, the writing comes easier, and I worry far less about what people are thinking.  Now if those aren't good enough reasons to blog more often, I don't know what is.

So I'll keep trying to turn my blog into something other than a cactus.

Because honestly, I'm not really a cactus kind of girl.  But you already knew that, didn't you?

  2. I agree with those lessons - I've learned them, too, but didn't put them into words - now you did that for me. I have a new post almost ready...thanks for encouraging me to just do it!
And that thing about the cactus - seriously funny!
